Lubbock received 3.63 inches of rain during August, way above the
expected total for the month of 0.83 inches, bringing the year’s total
to 18.71 inches, way above the average to-date total of 11.87 inches.
Thanks to widespread rainfall, according to the US Drought Monitor,
none of our fifteen-county region remains in drought (for the third
month in a row!) and, as hoped, late summer/early fall birding has
been quite interesting with an abundance of insects and other prey
items taking advantage of the abundant water and luxurious, by our
standards, foliage.

SUMMER TANAGER: 1 at Yellowhouse Canyon (Lubbock) on 8/2/21 (SA, AH) –
WAS PROBABLY PART OF THE SMALL BREEDING CONTINGENT AT THE SITE THIS
SEASON. 1 female at the CR R x FM 2053 Woodlot (Lynn) on 8/7/21 (SA,
AH) – WAS MOST LIKELY AN EARLY MIGRANT.
WESTERN TANAGER: 1 male on the TTU HSC Campus (Lubbock) on 8/27/21
(AH) the only report received – RIGHT ON TIME BUT LOW NUMBERS THUS
FAR.
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK: 1 male at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 8/22/21 (JM,
BSh) the only report received – A BIT LOW.
INDIGO BUNTING: 1 immature male at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 8/14/21
(AH), 1 female at Yellowhouse Canyon (Lubbock) on 8/14/21 (SA, AH),
and 1 at the CR F x Highway 70 Playa (Hale) on 8/29/21 (NP) the only
reports received – A BIT LOW BY CONTEMPORARY STANDARDS.
