With 12.12 inches of rain during the month, considerably above the average
May tally of 2.31 inches, Lubbock was at 15.93 inches of rain for the year,
almost three times the average year-to-date total of 5.57 inches. This had
an interest impact on birds: almost overnight, we went from too dry for
shorebirds and waders in April to too wet for shorebirds and waders in
May. This, coupled with generally good winds for northbound migrants -
with almost nothing in the way of stalling fronts from the north, continued
the pattern of a poor spring migration for birdwatchers.

I am unable to create a usable summary of eBird data of sightings in the
region during the period covered - IN THE AMOUNT OF TIME I HAVE AVAILABLE.
Comments at the end of each species summary have been adjusted, to the best
of my abilities, to reflect this reduction in reports.

As always, the county follows the site in ( ) and birds are mentioned by
virtue of rarity, atypical abundance, or atypical scarcity.

ERRATA: Several sightings at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey), including 4 Blue-winged
Teals, 10 American Avocets, 2 WILLETS, 30 Least Sandpipers, 140 Wilson's
