Greetings All:

I spent this morning in Lubbock County checking out a former hotspot and
then, having been disappointed, returning to Lubbock to bird a contemporary
hotspot.

I started the day with the journey up to New Deal to see if recent rains
had had a positive impact on the New Deal Playa Complex - a set of playas
along CR 2500 between FM 1729 (north) and Emerson Road (south). The nearby
water treatment ponds were full but the playas were fairly dry and, worse,
CR 2500 has been allowed to deteriorate to almost non-navigable stretches
of sand.

My only highlight during this part of the morning was a Northern Harrier
along North Loop 289 in Lubbock.

I then spent 1.5 hours at Clapp Park where I tallied 27 species of bird (as
well as 24 species of butterfly) including 11 Snowy Egrets, 2
Yellow-crowned Night Herons, 1 mystery hummingbird, 1 Ruby-throated
Hummingbird, 1 Northern Flicker, 1 male Common Yellowthroat, 1 male Indigo
Bunting, and 2 male Bronzed Cowbirds.

Waiting on the migrants; Anthony 'Fat Tony' Hewetson; Lubbock
