I had a good candidate for a lone short-billed at McAlister early this
afternoon. All the shorebirds flushed and I was unable to refind it on the N or
E side, but didn’t check the entire playa. I couldn’t refind the Stilt
Sandpipers that it was with either. Did see a Peregrine later, so maybe that’s
what did it. Here are my notes:
Slender and flat backed. Bill had a single kink near the tip, not a gradual
slight decurve. Breeding plumage. Back feathers were black centered with thin
white edging with some gold edging mixed in. Gold on center upper back. Full
orange underside including undertail coverts. Black spotted/speckled undertail
coverts. Sides of neck appeared heavily spotted. Uncertain about center of neck
and upper beast. A few speckles on flanks/sides. With the Stilt Sandpipers.
