Here is my list from today at V8. Sheri and I walked together for the first
large portion of the checklist before she had to leave. Thanks again to
Glenda and Lena for organizing. What a great day!

1 Snow Goose -- Single dark morph individual at Blake Lake. Dark bodied
goose with white head/face and obvious grin patch. Will add photos.
2 Greater White-fronted Goose -- 2 late staying, large geese with barred
fronts, pinkish bills and orange legs seen at Blake Lake with single snow
goose. Will add photos.

1 Zone-tailed Hawk -- Large, dark raptor with fine barring under relatively
narrow wings (much narrower than expected for common black-hawk) with dark
trailing edge. Bold white tail band is what initially caught my eye. Long,
yellow legs with and yellow bill with black tip. Seen settling down into
large cottonwood trees along creek near V8 headquarters, and immediately
flushed when I walked over to search for it. Got very close looks as it
flew by to investigate, but quickly was lost in the treelike above, so
unfortunately no chance for photos. Hopefully a sign that this (presumably
continuing individual) may stay around for a while.
1 Eastern Screech-Owl -- Viewed from red fencing just west of headquarters.

1 Bell's Vireo -- Heard calling from across stream, before bird came
closer. Small, gray vireo with single white wing bar and faint eyeline.

calls, much deeper than expected for Chihuahuan. Neck feathers with dark
base when ruffled in the wind.

In addition to the blue grosbeak, the only other late addition I would add
to the list is an osprey. It was a flyover, but definitely in the area.

farm house) did a little work on the photo, which is heavily backlit. Found
some brown streaks on the wing that seem consistent with a blue grosbeak.

Directions from the intersection of 289E and E 50th Street: Head east on E
50th St for 3.3 miles, then make a right into FM835. The entrance to the V8
ranch is 1.5 miles on your right (about 1/2 mile after the entrance to
Buffalo Springs Lake).

Those interested in participating in City Nature Challenge are welcome to
stay until 5pm.

We'll be doing *a lot of walking* and there may be *hills and uneven
surfaces*, so appropriate footwear, water, snacks, etc, is advised.
Friends and family welcome. Warning: There may be rattlesnakes.
