Johny Nelson's persistence with a particular melospizid sparrow
reminded me of an issue that folk, including your faithful LEAS and
eBird reviewer, are trying to work out.
Once again, I am calling on the faithful eBird contributors in the
region to do their best to photo-document Song Sparrows found in the
region during the latter half of April into May ... as there is a
theory out there that most Song Sparrow reports from the last week of
April into May are misidentified. I do not concur with this theory as
I feel it fails to take into account the uniqueness of our region,
relative to portions of Texas south and east of the Caprock
Escarpment, in terms of elevation and relative lateness of departure
for some wintering species but, as they say, the proof is in the
pudding and identifiable photographs of Song Sparrow continue to be of
considerable worth.
