Greetings Jennifer: The problem is that the variety of Short-billed Dowitcher likely to be found in our region is the one that most resembles Long-billed Dowitcher in adult plumage. Juveniles are easier to tell apart visually but that's not what you will be dealing with at this time of year. The main thing supporting the identification of this bird as a Long-billed Dowitcher is that confirmed Short-billed Dowitchers away from salt water in winter are virtually unheard of whereas Long-billed Dowitchers have been collected fairly regularly in the interior during winter. A warning about the call notes, formerly considered clinchers ID-wise and generally provided in field guides. They may not be as distinct as formerly thought. Guy Park Hi Anthony, Thanks! I wanted to assume that it was a Long-billed based on the distribution map in my Sibley guide, but I am never sure with Dowitchers. What is the best way to tell them apart or are we most likely to only have Long-billed based on their migration path?
