Skipped the cemetery this afternoon and drove through the canyon lakes.
Two Cattle Egrets were in the yard at work. Two flew into Mae Simmons, possibly
the same birds. At least one Tree Swallow was in the swallows over the
spillway. Did not see a Bank Swallow, but didn’t stay and watch long. Barn and
Cliff Swallows were present throughout the lakes. Two Snowy Egrets were either
side of the spillway and a third was at Mackenzie Park. The Common Grackles
were still in the stream below the spillway. A Cinnamon Teal was on Lake 6. Two
Great Egrets were at Mae Simmons and a third was at Mackenzie. Also at
Mackenzie were 4 Canada Geese. On the south side of Aztlan Park I was surprised
to find 8 Bronzed cowbirds. It appeared that there was one alpha male, a second
male, and 6 females and/or immature males. A small flock of 8-12 Chipping
Sparrows was also at Aztlan. A male Brown-headed Cowbird was hanging out with a
flock of mostly female Redwings. A Swainson’s Hawk was across from the Erskine
Marsh. A Loggerhead Shrike was on the fence north of Lake 2 east of University.
A male Bufflehead was in the lake. Robins, Starlings, and Common Grackles were
spread all through the lakes. Burrowing owls were present at most of the
Prairie Dog towns.
