I’m am far behind in replying, but in addition to everyone else’s great
suggestions, I have never had more cool bugs and birds as when I let wild
sunflowers (the ones as Clapp) and zinnias (and even pumpkins) take over my
backyard (and I do mean take over). I don’t live in an area with lots of
landscaping or out in a less developed area so I don’t get most of the birds
that others get on a regular basis, but I had orioles and warblers and
hummingbirds and all kinds of great stuff that year. Hummingbirds and
caterpillars also really like Scarlet Sage. It’s an annual and easy to grow
from seed. I have slowly put in annuals and worked to incorporate as many host
plants and natives as I can, but so far that was my best summer.
