The main point: there were two Greater White Fronted Geese at Leftwich Park
this afternoon.
The backstory: I bought a monopod for my spotting scope at Armadillo Camera
today. Eager to try it out on live birds, and short on time, I drove to the
nearest playa, Leftwich Park (in hindsight I suppose Maxey was closer). There
were about a thousand Canada/Cackling geese milling around. So as a joke, I
said to myself "I'm going to spot the two White-Fronted Geese in here."
After a few minutes of scanning them, sure enough: there they were, two of
them. Maybe I should have said "I'm going to find the two Brant in here."
I like this monopod: so much more portable and convenient than the tripod.
It's not as stable as a tripod, but I found that I could get the hang of it;
and ultimately, with one arm to stabilize and one hand to focus, it was no
worse than the tripod on a mildly windy day.
