Hi All,
Our last twenty minutes birding at Canyon Lake #6 this evening was exciting.
Brad Shine and myself were unable to find the Northern Shrike in the areas
that that it was previously located, so we walked down the old abandoned
railway, in a last gasp chance at finding the Northern Shrike, and there it
was masquerading as a mockingbird in a dead tree. Once we realized it was
our target bird we both got good photos before a biker flushed the shrike and
it flew northwest out to the field and landed in another, but larger dead
tree.
Earlier, as we were birding, hundreds of Sandhill Cranes were flying over,
and we joked about seeing a Whooping Crane. As we were about to leave a huge
Sandhill Crane flock flew over and there was one huge white bird-a Whooping
Crane. We were astonished! We both got photos. I am still unable to post
photos to the listserver so below is my eBird post with pictures.

Enjoy the chase!

What a gift to see a whooping crane! I heard two flocks of sand hill cranes
this evening – I think I hurt my neck jerking it up to look for a big white
bird.

What a day! Congratulations- I'm stuck teaching tomorrow but might give the
bike trails a go on Thursday if the shrike holds on that long.
