Hi All,
I had a great morning birding Yellowhouse Canyon this morning. I originally
went to Clapp Park, but the mowers were intolerable so I left and went to the
canyon. The warblers have moved on but I did see two Yellow Warblers. In
the vicinity of the oxbow I had a beautiful male Rose-breasted Grosbeak and a
beautiful male Western Tanager. I also had at least four Lazuli Buntings,
two males and two females.
Just below the first low water bridge I had a late Townsend’s Solitaire. I
heard but did not see a Bell’s Vireo, near the oxbow. On the way back to the
car, near the graffitied walls of an old building I saw and photographed an
Eastern Kingbird, a lubbock county lifer for me.
Near the almost pond like section of the stream below the first low water
bridge there is a Painted Bunting with yellow undersides and yellow eye ring.
Both areas should be red. It is an interesting variation.

Also, a friend contacted me and wanted an identification of a bird they had
photographed in central Lubbock, it was a Western Tanager. Keep your eyes
open, she said they had several of these birds.
