I think your bird is a Hermit Thrush, probably “Interior West” as pictured in
Sibley’s. The eye-ring is clearly white and somewhat uniform in width. Sibley’s
depicts the Gray-cheeked eye-ring as grayer, but more importantly, wider before
and behind the eye. The tail appears reddish, where the Gray-cheeked is
brownish. The background to the breast spots is whitish rather than tan and the
spots are fewer and more distinct than would be the case for Gray-cheeked. The
wingtips appear even with
the under-tail coverts. These are all consistent with the depiction of Hermit
Thrush in Sibley’s. I’m no expert and another picture might show something
different.
Great picture. Catharus thrushes are almost always in deep shadows when I find
them. In most of my pictures it’s hard to find the bird, much less tell it’s a
thrush.
