Mr. Gates, the world's richest man, said in a statement Tuesday his company will invest $400 million over the next three years to improve computer education in India. Monday, Mr. Gates pledged a donation of $100 million to help India fight the spread of AIDS. India has the world's second-largest group of people with the AIDS virus, second only to South Africa.... Mr. Gates said he is committed to putting his personal fortune back into society. He said India's strength is in its education system and a fast developing communications structure. Mr. Gates said $20 million of the pledge money will go to support information technology programs for some 3.5 million students and 80,000 school teachers in government-run schools. He said his company will also set up 10 Microsoft Information Technology Academy Centers in partnership with Indian states, and will launch Microsoft software in India's widely-spoken Hindi language.
