Bill Gates, the head of computer software giant Microsoft Corporation, has
pledged $500 million to India during a four-day trip to the country to
heighten awareness about AIDS and promote information technology.

Mr. Gates, the world's richest man, said in a statement Tuesday his company
will invest $400 million over the next three years to improve computer
education in India.

Monday, Mr. Gates pledged a donation of $100 million to help India fight the
spread of AIDS. India has the world's second-largest group of people with
the AIDS virus, second only to South Africa....

Mr. Gates said he is committed to putting his personal fortune back into
society.

He said India's strength is in its education system and a fast developing
communications structure. Mr. Gates said $20 million of the pledge money
will go to support information technology programs for some 3.5 million
students and 80,000 school teachers in government-run schools.

He said his company will also set up 10 Microsoft Information Technology
Academy Centers in partnership with Indian states, and will launch Microsoft
software in India's widely-spoken Hindi language.
