I would like to invite you all to a conference that is spread over June 22,
23 and 24 titled -
*Tea: Nature, Culture, Society, 1650-1850, June 22-24 / Hosted by the
Linnean Society of London and organised by Richard Coulton (QMUL), Jordan
Goodman (UCL), and Romita Ray (Syracuse University). The conference is free
and online.*
*Note: Just to add that we will not be providing conference participation
certificates.*
This international meeting will address natural, cultural and social
histories of tea between the mid-seventeenth and mid-nineteenth centuries.
Arguably the first truly modern globalised commodity, the process by which
tea attained such pre-eminence depended not just upon the commercial
efforts of merchants, but also upon a cultural framework of knowledge and
practice constructed primarily in China, Britain, Europe, and India.
Among other topics, the meeting will explore natural histories of the tea
plant; the mobility of Chinese tea and porcelain; European attempts to
cultivate tea; imaginaries of tea in literature and art; tea and material
culture; tea, identity, and the formation of the British Empire.
*These three days will also include screening of exclusive thematic short
films from archives and collections from around the world including
Academia Sinica, Taipei (Taiwan), Tocklai Tea Research Institute, Assam
(India), Tea History Collection of Banbury (UK), National Maritime Museum
Greenwich (UK), Chitra Collection of Historic Teawares London (UK), Oak
Spring Garden Foundation (US), Bartram’s Garden, Philadelphia (US), and
Peabody Essex Museum, Massachusetts (US).*
