The Government of India has just sanctioned, in principle, a high level
national mission to prioritize strategic directions and synthesize existing
knowledge on the role of biodiversity and well-functioning ecosystems in
mitigating climate disasters and increasing resilience to climate change.
As a precursor to this mission, we are looking for a Junior Research Fellow
for a project relating to quantifying and mapping key risks to biodiversity
and ecosystem functioning from climate change, and assessing and mapping
the role of biodiversity in climate disaster risk mitigation across
different biomes in the country.
The successful candidate will be based at the Ashoka Trust for Research in
Ecology & the Environment (ATREE), Bengaluru and will be primarily be
responsible for: i) organizing meetings and regional-level consultations
with different stakeholders on issues relating to climate change and
disaster mitigation, and ii) carrying out literature surveys to synthesize
the state-of-knowledge on climate change impacts on biodiversity in the
country, and the role of biodiversity in disaster risk mitigation in
India. The candidate will also assist in the development of spatially
explicit maps of the vulnerability of different Indian ecosystems to
climate change, and in the preparation of a report synthesizing the
findings of the project. The candidate will work in close association with
a post-doctoral researcher and a team of scientists from the Ashoka Trust
for Research in Ecology & the Environment (ATREE), Bengaluru, and the
National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bengaluru.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with an MSc in ecology /
climate science/ biological sciences or a related area. The successful
candidate must be able to work independently under tight deadlines, have
excellent written and oral communication skills and organizational
abilities, and also be able to work in a collaborative research
environment. Programming skills in R and/or GIS/RS training and /or
climate change modelling skills is a definite plus. The successful
candidate will be based in Bangalore, and will work collaboratively with
and Dr. Jagdish Krishnaswamy (ATREE, Bangalore), Dr. Uma Ramakrishnan
(NCBS, Bangalore) and Dr. Mahesh Sankaran (NCBS, Bangalore). Salaries will
be in accordance with Government of India norms.
