resources?
Do you want to pursue a career in marine sciences and want to acquire
theoretical and practical knowledge of marine systems?
If so, then this rigorous two-week, hands-on course in marine biology and
ecology that combines lectures, field activities, discussions and
independent research projects, is just right for you! Immerse yourself in
the field of marine biology and ecology through our Department of
Biotechnology sponsored course that is designed and executed by the Indian
Institute of Science and Dakshin Foundation. The two-week course will be
held at the field base of the Andaman and Nicobar Environment Team (ANET),
a collaborative research and education centre of the Madras Crocodile Bank
Trust (MCBT) and Dakshin Foundation located in South Andaman Island. The
ANET base allows easy access to a variety of coastal and marine ecosystems,
including extensive mangrove creeks, sea grass beds, coral reefs, and sandy
and rocky beaches. Lectures and discussions will familiarize students with
the basics of marine vertebrates, marine invertebrates, larval ecology,
community ecology, marine ecosystems, oceanography, marine biotechnology
and conservation. Field visits and activities will expose students to
adaptations and interactions of marine organisms in the intertidal,
subtidal and neustonic layers of the ocean and the anthropogenic factors
that influence them. Furthermore, independent research projects will
provide students the opportunity to conduct hands-on research, delving into
the philosophy and practice of science.

This course is sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, and all course
fees, food and accommodation is covered. Participants will be required to
make their own travel arrangement to the islands. Limited travel
fellowships are available based on financial need and academic merit, and
applicants should justify their need for a travel fellowship in their
statement of purpose.
