*The Flock* has been winging its way to inboxes every year for two whole
years now -- that's 24 editions! We have tried to bring you interesting
information, news, events and opportunities related to birds and
birdwatching. But did you know that a lot of knowledge about birds comes
from the efforts of birdwatchers like you and us?
This edition carries many opportunities to join bird counts and surveys --
essential for an understanding of where birds are distributed, and for
monitoring the health of their populations. These events are your chance to
contribute back to birds!
January is the month of the *Asian Waterbird Census*, and February brings
the annual *Great Backyard Bird Count* *(GBBC) *and accompanying *Campus
Bird Count*. Alongside these nationwide events, the next few months see
bird surveys in Kanha, Pakke, Phansad, Haldwani and more.
Counts and surveys can be on the more casual end of the spectrum (just go
birding) or may have well-defined protocols (walk along a 2km transect).

Birdy Count
The Asian Waterbird Census

(AWC) is the longest running bird counting event in India, having started
in 1987, and conducted every year since then. The idea is simple: choose a
wetland habitat, visit it on any day in December to February (recommended
dates 7-22 Jan), survey it as completely as possible, and count the numbers
of all wetland-associated species. (OK, actually *doing *this is a little
more complicated!) Results from the AWC have been used to identify
important sites for conservation, and to monitor how species are faring.
