Birds are famous wanderers. Not just migratory species, which travel
thousands of kilometres each year; but also normally sedentary birds. Blown
by winds or riding on ships, they can find themselves in strange and
distant lands. Birdwatchers too match up to these different types! Some
mostly stay put, making the occasional foray to an exciting birding spot.
Others are as restless as a post-breeding warbler, itching to explore new
places and see new species. Which type are you? What are your favourite
birding places to travel to? Reply to this email and tell us!
This month, our focus is on the travelling behaviour of birders: where they
like to go, and what they do there. We highlight a famous birding location
and a famous travelling birder; and how you can describe your birding trips
for others to enjoy!
Birding Hotspot
One of India’s best-known birdwatching spots isn’t heard so much about
these days, but remains a wonderful destination both for the beginning
birder (who can easily see a multitude of species up close there) as well
as the experienced twitcher (since it attracts a large number of migrants,
including rarities). The place? Keoladeo National Park, better known by the
name of the nearby town: Bharatpur

With nearly 400 species reported

from the national park, it is known for both winter migrants as well as the
resident waterbirds that breed en masse during and just after the monsoon.
The birds there are also famously friendly, and so are great for the
beginning birdwatcher or bird photographer!
Trip Reports
OK so you have gone on a trip to a birding destination. Perhaps a small
family vacation to a nice place nearby. Perhaps a dedicated trip to a
spectacular site, like to see Amur Falcons in Nagaland, or trans-Himalayan
birds in Ladakh. You bring back birdlists and memories, maybe photos too.
What’s the next thing to do? Create a trip report, of course! Trip reports
are written and visual records of what you have experienced, for you to
pass around to your birding friends, and to enjoy and savour years later.

Shashank Dalvi
Speaking of travelling to look for birds, the most extreme and exciting
form of this pursuit is to conduct what’s called a ‘Big Year’, which
involves looking for and recording as many species as possible during the
course of a single calendar year in a particular region. In India, the
record for a Big Year is held by researcher-birdwatcher Shashank Dalvi, who
in 2015 criss-crossed the country to add species to his list, eventually
ending up finding over 1,100 species, some 80% of all species known from
India! As you can imagine this was an action-packed year for Shashank, who
