*AT ULUKA CENTRE OF LEARNING AND RESEARCH (U C L R), SIRSI*
This summer our comprehensive *Green Studies Curriculum* covers *place
based learning* methods in an experiential way. We go from value based
learning to Ecology and Sustainability; from packing your bags to learning
science and math concepts from nature; from how useful things are for us to
how we are useful to the environment; all the way up to how to work, relax
and enjoy life - Nature’s Style!
Using a hands-on approach allows participants to ‘get their hands dirty’
and ‘get mud between their toes’, while reinforcing essential skills and
learnings based on their MI (Multiple Intelligences).
The aim of our green studies curriculum is to:
1. Nurture respect for the natural world
2. Develop deep ecological values
3. Build awareness of, and engagement with, the many
readily-accessible resources on our campus, including, but not limited to
food gardens, aquatic systems, animal husbandry, and sustainable and
renewable building materials
4. Understand sustainability and systems as a web of relationships
interacting with communities – human and non-human – in ways that enable
them to live and develop according to their nature.
5. Show participants different ways in which they can learn various
topics and subjects from directly from nature. For example: the art and
science of making maps, the science behind art and the art within science.
6. Make participants understand they can figure out their interests,
strengths and weaknesses, assess and evaluate themselves with the knowledge
around them in the lap of nature.
7. To connect participants with plants, animals and each other in an
empathic manner, while understanding the language of nature.
8. Energize and rejuvenate themselves through various relaxation
techniques nature’s style and nature’s therapeutic methods.
9. Connect participants with local art forms (visual and performing),
local history, local culture and local cuisines as well amongst other
things.
10. Encourage and promote Environmental and Sustainability leaders amongst
the participants.
