Dear All,
We have a four month (February-May, 2018) internship opportunity in one of
our on-going project “Assessment of agriculture vulnerability in the
Himalayan region: A case study from Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand” at
Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun.
*Project description: *Traditional farming communities of Indian
Himalayan Region (IHR) have preserved numerous native crops that are
suitable for the marginal lands and harsh climatic conditions. This
traditionally rich farming system of IHR is under enormous pressure due to:
preference for modern high yielding crops, increasing incidences of crop
depredation by wildlife, degradation of traditional knowledge, climate
change and outmigration of rural communities to urban areas. In our project
we study the influence of the aforementioned factors on the agriculture
system in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, Western Himalayas.
*Location: *The study area Pithoragarh district is bordered on the east
by Nepal and north by Tibetan Autonomous Region of China. Pithoragarh
district is bestowed with high natural and socio-cultural heritage; also
have number of picturesque landscapes and snow caped mountains.
*Tasks*: (i) House hold survey on the socio-economy of farming
communities in target study villages (ii) Documenting indigenous practices
associated with mountain agriculture (iii) Data entry and basic data
analysis in MS-Excel.
*Desirable qualification*: Master’s degree in any branch of life science
or sociology is preferred (Students who wish to pursue their master’s
thesis work on a topic related to the project objective are also encouraged
to apply). Candidate should have a keen interest for research in the field
of agriculture and climate change adaptation mechanisms. The main part of
field work is to carryout questionnaire surveys, therefore, good
communication skill in Hindi is must (knowledge of Kumauni is a plus). The
field work involves extensive travel across the study area – often on
difficult terrain – and staying in remote villages. Therefore, physical
fitness and enthusiasm to work in remote field sites is must.
*Benefits*: Basic accommodation facilities will be provided in the base
camp (at Munsyari and Pithoragarh) during the field work and travel
expenses will be covered in the project. A monthly emolument of Rs. 5000/-
will be paid during the internship period.
