Several species of sharks and rays are classified as endangered in India,
and their stocks have also been rapidly declining throughout Indian waters.
Yet our knowledge of Indian elasmobranchs is mostly limited to their catch
frequencies and annual catch trends. Information on their ecology is
sparse, and this project, which is a part of my PhD research at the Indian
Institute of Science, aims to fulfil this knowledge gap.
Fieldwork for this project will primarily be at Malvan, Maharashtra, and
would involve a) sampling catches from fishing vessels to quantify
elasmobranch catch rates and b) speaking to fishers about fishing effort
(fishing location, fishing trip details, etc.).
I am looking for volunteers/field assistants interested in working on, and
conserving sharks and rays. Applicants would be required to have a good
command of Marathi/Malvani/Konkani language. The project duration is six
months (up to mid-April), but field sampling would only require 3-4 hrs a
day for 5-6 days a week, in early mornings and/or late evenings. Although
applicants with a longer commitment would be preferred, others who can only
work for shorter durations (at least one month) are also welcome to apply.
Applicants from Malvan or nearby areas may also have the opportunity to
work intermittently.
A monthly stipend of Rs. 5000/- will be renumerated to a dedicated and
sincere field assistant, but stipends cannot be granted to volunteers.
Field costs, including local travel (within Malvan) and food, will be
covered separately, and basic, shared accommodation will be provided. Costs
of travel to and from Malvan will have to be borne by the applicant.
