Dolphin tourism in Goa.

I am a post-graduate student at the Wildlife Biology and Conservation
Course, at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore. I am
looking for interns for my thesis project on, “Understanding the
socio-ecological implications of dolphin watching tourism for conservation
of the Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphins (*Sousa plumbea)* in Goa.”
The project aims to quantify the impacts of dolphin watching tourism
vessels on dolphin behavior, while also understanding the complexities that
shape the boat operators current behaviors and perceptions towards the
species.
* Opportunities:*
1. Behavioral observations of the Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphin (*Sousa
plumbea*) to understand time activity budgets and changes in behavioral
states due to varying vessel intensities.
2. Meetings with operators to understand how historical interactions, the
evolution of the activity and their outlook on the potential for the future
of this activity shapes current perceptions of the species.
3. Learning and practicing skills like focal observations, modeling of
behavioral data, and qualitative and mixed methods approaches to understand
some of the complexities that determine interactions of communities with
spaces and species.
4. Exposure to a growing community of people involved in environmental and
community based conservation in the state of Goa.
5. Experiencing the state of Goa from a different lens.
* Facilities provided:*
Full coverage of local project-related expenses. Housing, food and local
transport.
* Expectations of an intern:*
1. Availability through the entire duration of the project (November 2019 –
May 2020)
2. Punctuality, honesty, sensitivity to local communities and a drive to
work in harsh weather conditions.
3. Physical fitness to undertake field work in temperatures of 21-36 degree
Celsius in extremely high humidity.
4. Eagerness to learn and acquire new skills in the field.
A general respectful and amicable behavior is expected of the intern in
relation to colleagues and other persons that they are exposed to. A needed
mention of some behaviors that will not be tolerated: regular use of
intoxicants especially during field work, disruptive behavior, disorderly
conduct, bullying and sexual harassment. It is necessary to understand that
this state is home to numerous people and is not just a holiday
destination.

Age 18-22. Students from any background showing an interest and passion for
the marine space and community driven conservation are encouraged to
apply. *People
of Goan origin are especially encouraged to apply.*
