Wetland Watch 2023
Voluntary Nature Conservancy (VNC India, https://vncindia.org ) is
organizing “Wetland Watch 2023” from 19-21 May 2023, which incorporates a
holistic understanding of the ecosystem functioning and associated fauna of
wetlands and provides an opportunity to observe a large congregation of
Mugger crocodiles and Sarus crane. It is a citizen science event, wherein
people from various walks of life come together to estimate the population
of Crocodiles and Cranes in Charotar.
Charotar region, consisting of parts of Anand and Kheda Districts in
Gujarat, is famous for crocodiles, but few know that it also hosts one of
the largest populations of Sarus cranes as well, not to mention other
numerous wetland birds, and raptors. Wetland Watch is designed to provide
an opportunity to understand the ecology of a wetland ecosystem and
associated species like crocodiles, Sarus cranes and associated species,
and hands-on training on research methods, conservation strategies, as well
as tools and techniques for monitoring wetland fauna.
Why Attend Wetland Watch 2023?
1) Learn the ecology and functioning of a wetland ecosystem.
2) Understand mugger crocodile ecology, observe them in their natural
habitat, and participate in crocodile monitoring.
3) See a large congregation of Sarus Cranes, that gather in large
numbers (80-100 individuals) only during summers.
4) Understand how species like crocodiles and Sarus cranes share these
wetlands with villagers around and interact with them in this landscape.
5) Meet people who share spaces with this majestic species and
understand how people see these species.
6) Learn tools, techniques, and instruments used in monitoring
crocodile and Sarus cranes, two flagship species of wetland ecosystem in
this landscape.
7) Especially learn the techniques of how to monitor crocodiles at the night
using the eye shine count method.
Dates: 19-21 May 2023,
