Dear all,

The School of Human Ecology, Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD), India is
organising *Entangled Natures - A green Conference on Human Ecology
<http://www.entanglednatures.com>* from 14 - 17 Feb 2019 at its Kashmere
Gate Campus. This conference invites scholars and students who are engaged
in research within human ecology to participate in five panel sessions
that reflect thematic areas of research within the School of Human Ecology
at present.

Islands have long been a living laboratory for ecological and evolutionary
studies and more recently for social research in light the distinctive
character of social and economic impacts of natural disasters in islands
across the world. Islands therefore are more than insular spaces, and
oceans thus are bodies that simultaneously separate and connect islands.
Even so, India’s two island groups - Lakshadweep Islands and Andaman and
Nicobar Islands - have remained marginal to social, ecological and
intellectual expansion relevant to their context.

Recently however, interdisciplinary scholarship on islands has furthered
understanding of island realities, and thereby informed development and
conservation policy in India’s islands to some extent. We see for instance,
how colonial entanglements in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands may have
shaped the geopolitical, developmental and perhaps environmental futures of
this archipelago. At the same time, the interlinkage between
social-cultural values, winds, currents and seasons manifest in regimes of
Nicobari resource use that are as elaborate, robust, unique and immensely
rich as the island ecosystems themselves. This brings to the fore the
tensions between the decision-making for the islands and daily life on the
islands. Island realities emanate from the coherence of island ecologies,
and this is a worldview that explicitly acknowledges that the
particularities of island life that cannot be understood from a mainland
perspective.

I'm writing to invite invite scholars working on the social anthropology
and ecological history of India's Islands to:

   - highlight how the ecology of islands have shaped the human society and
   its culture, and simultaneously been reshaped by it
   - share empirical research on contemporary challenges in the culture,
   economy and environment of Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar islands

We propose this panel with a view to encourage research into questions of
India’s island ecology, landscapes, and society that advance our knowledge
of the origins, lives and futures of the islands. Original contributions
that advance our understanding of island ecologies and societies are
welcome.
