*Project Associate*
The Wildlife Conservation Society – India (WCS-India) is a non-profit
organization incorporated under Section 25 of the Companies Act 1956 to
pursue training and conservation activities for the protection of India’s
wildlife and wild habitats. Its core strength is a long track record of
on-ground conservation informed by science, training, education and
contribution to pro-wildlife policy issues across the globe.
WCS-India invites applications from highly motivated individuals with at
least 3 years of experience in implementing research and conservation
activities, to aid in different components of its Marine Conservation
Program.
*Description of the role*
The Project Associate, Marine Conservation Program will provide technical
and strategic inputs and implement relevant activities under the program.
The person will report to the Head of the Marine Conservation Program.
This person’s key roles will involve assuming responsibility for activity
planning and implementation, coordination and communication with
stakeholders, partnering with relevant institutions, and aiding in the
proper dissemination and outreach of impacts. In addition, the Project
Associate will work with existing and potential donors to secure the
sustenance of the program. A strong belief and interest in marine
conservation through effective biological research and monitoring, along
with timely community interventions are sacrosanct for this role.
*Essential qualifications*
- A post-graduate degree, preferably a Master’s Degree in Wildlife
Sciences, Social Sciences, Conservation Practice or allied disciplines,
with 2-3 years of interdisciplinary experience in conducting biological or
social research or implementing conservation action. Equivalent relevant
work experience will also be considered.
- Sensitivity in working with fishing communities and other stakeholders.
- Excellent communication skills and fluency in English and any coastal
language.
- Ability to work independently, and to collaborate effectively as a
member of a team.
- A willingness to travel alone when required.
*Desirable qualifications*
- Experience in conducting training programs and workshops for fishers,
Government authorities and other stakeholders.
- Experience in preparing technical and scientific project reports, and
training/outreach materials related to marine conservation.
- Open ocean diving certification.
- Knowledge of handling, analysing and visualising data using GIS
platforms and analysis
software such as R.
- Highly motivated with good understanding of the various issues and
policies related to conser- vation and management of marine biodiversity.
* Broad responsibilities*
- Assisting in the strategic growth and development of the Marine
Conservation Program.
- Aiding in the creation, planning and funding of new and on-going
projects.
- Developing and sustaining alliances with stakeholder communities,
NGOs, state and central government agencies and other relevant
organisations to realise project objectives.
- Liaising with state Forest, Fisheries and Tourism departments, and the
Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, to facilitate
collaborative efforts, statutory clearances and compliances.
- Collection and analysis of data for field projects and providing
inputs on these aspects on an ongoing basis.
- Contributing to the development and preparation of manuscripts for
WCS-India’s internal publications as well as peer-reviewed journals.
- Aiding in the development and delivery of presentations to the
academic communities, government agencies and existing or potential private
sector donors as required.
* Remuneration*
Dependent on qualifications and experience, consistent with internal
standards of WCS-India.
*Location*
The position will be based at Bangalore with frequent travel to sites
across the Indian coastline.
