MICROFAUNA EXPEDITION 2014

The Place:-

Palsambe is a small hamlet situated on Kolhapur-Vijaydurg road in
Maharashtra. It is geographically located at a height of 900mtrs above
mean sea-level and near the crest line of the Western Ghats. Palsambe
is a part of Sahyadri Tiger Reserve. Receiving an annual rainfall of
5080mm, makes this is a must visit destination for those who seek to
know more about microfauna. As the monsoons settle in Palsambe the
areas around flourish with croaking, slithering and crawling beauties.
Pit Vipers, Kraits, Cat Snakes, Vine Snakes, Bush Frogs, Tree Frogs,
Toads, Millipedes, Centipedes are just a few to name. Palsambe is an
area not much explored and you may be in for surprises as you explore
around.



The Program:-

India has an abundance of Microfauna and yet very less is known, which
results into scarcity of scientific data. For some of the microfauna
basic identification is also a challenge. This becomes a critical
issue while conservation of habitats as all the microfauna plays a key
role in health and survival of the specific habitats. This Expedition
will mainly focus on introducing participants to lesser known
creatures along with some basic techniques used in field research.
This expedition will help individuals to collect base line data as
well as provide them the exposure to a network of people working on
different lesser known creatures. The ultimate aim of this expedition
is to generate an interest amongst the individuals about microfauna.


Key Features:-

 Basics of Snake Taxonomy.
Introduction to Myriopods (millipedes & centipeds).
Basic information about other microfauna groups like ants, frogs,
lizards, butterflies, moths, bugs, beetles etc.
Hands on experience to use weather meter and GPS.
Introduction to several Data Sheets
Snake bite protocol.
Slide shows and Films.
Immense opportunities to photograph these less known beauties.
Tips on photography.

Dates:-

15th to 18th August 2013. (On 15th August at 8:30am participants will
be picked up from Central Bus Stand, Kolhapur and on 18thAugust at
3:30pm will be dropped back at same spot)


Number of Participants:-

10 Seats only

(based on first come first preference basis. The participants with
good references from the microfauna field will be given high
preference) Essentials include physical fitness and ability to face
challenges in the South West monsoons. Basic experience in working in
field conditions in forest areas and affinity for lesser-known
biodiversity would be an added advantage. Please note that this
expedition is purely field work and study oriented. THIS IS NOT A
PICNIC. Consumption of alcohol during expedition is strictly
PROHIBITED.



The Stay:-

We will be staying at a farmhouse converted into a homestay called
‘The Camp’ Run by Mr. Devadatta Naik, a passionate nature lover and
microfauna enthusiast, The Camp provides a very comfortable stay and
delicious food.



Expedition Fees:-

5,500/- (Rs. Five Thousand Five Hundred Only)



Inclusions:-

Transportation from Kolhapur to Kolhapur by Tavera, Sumo or equivalent vehicles.
Simple Vegetarian Food and Accommodation on 3/4 sharing basis
throughout the expedition days.
Guidance from field expert/s.
Study Material & Equipment Handling Charges.

Exclusions:-

Breakfast on 15th August and dinner on 18th August.
Train or bus tickets to reach Kolhapur and travel back from your place.
Any local excursions around Palsambe or Kolhapur which are not part of
the expedition.
Mineral Water, Tips, Any extra food items.
Any other expenses which are not covered in the costs above.
