*Opening for a volunteer in bat project in Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary*
The project is a part of my PhD on bat communities in Kedarnath. Data
collection will involve mistnetting (followed by taking measurements from
live bats) and ultrasound recording. Although the bulk of fieldwork will
happen during the night, there will be many days where we will also work
during the day. The volunteer is expected to help with field data
collection and with organizing and managing the data. During/at the end of
the field season, there is a scope to help with acoustic analysis or learn
analysis with other datasets.
*Duration*: April and May 2020
*Candidates must be / have:*
a) Physically fit with experience of hiking through in hilly terrain and
forests.
b) Prior experience of mistnetting is a plus, but not necessary.
c) Willing to work long and arduous hours at night in cold weather.
d) Good social conduct and be respectful towards field assistants and
locals.
e) Willing to play lots and lots of games of Ludo during the free time :)
*The volunteer will have to put up with:*
a) Basic food and accommodation (and chocolates/sweets on me! ;-))
b) Carrying heavy load on certain days
c) Working at night
d) Some impromptu schedules owing to my frequent lack of planning
e) My pessimism (which begins on not catching any bat in the first fifteen
minutes)! :)
*In return he/she will enjoy:*
a) Hands-on training in bat trapping, handling, identification and the use
of bat detectors
b) Free time for birding, butterfly-watching etc.
c) Scenic vistas of mountains and coniferous forests
d) Aloo parathas (often in excess!) and Garhwali hospitality!
*Please note*
a) The position is ONLY for one person who can commit to the entire field
season of 2 months (of course, short breaks for important
personal/professional reasons are allowed!).
b) This is not a paid position. The volunteer will have to bear the travel
expenses to and from the field site, but all living and travel expenses in
the field will be covered by the project.
b) Preference will be given to undergraduate students of biological
sciences.
c) The selected candidate will need to get him/herself vaccinated against
rabies before the start of the field season.
d) Last year, I did accept requests from students/professionals who wanted
to come and learn about bats. If you cannot spend two months but would like
to join, I am happy to accommodate you (*strictly depending on availability
and field schedule*) and help you learn more, but you will have to cover
all your costs.
