PhD Position in Insect Ecology
The Mathis Lab has an opening for a Ph.D. student, with a potential start
date as early as Fall 2019. The lab is interested in understanding the
dynamics of multi-trophic interactions involving ants in agroecosystems.
To do so, we combine behavioral observations, manipulative field
experiments, chemical ecology techniques, and lab experiments to examine
the dynamics of interactions between ants, herbivores, pollinators, natural
enemies, and plants*. *One of the current foci in our work is seeking to
understand how changes in community composition and abiotic environments
affect the strength of ant-plant mutualisms. Work in our lab spans a range
of ecosystems, with field sites in Massachusetts, Arizona, California and
Mexico.
The lab seeks applications from independent, motivated, and creative
students with previous research experience and a strong background in
plant, insect, and/or chemical ecology. Students with a background in
statistics and programming experience using R, or a willingness to develop
these skills, are preferred. Women and members of other minority groups are

teaching, mentoring and outreach. Support by way to Teaching Assistantship
is guaranteed for five years, and includes tuition waiver.
