You are cordially invited to a talk titled

*Satellites, Sensors and Citizens: CEH Science for the Sustainable
Management of Freshwaters*

by

*Laurence Carvalho*
*Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), UK*

Date & Time: Monday, 26th February 2018 at 03:45pm
Venue: Auditorium
------------------------------

*Abstract *The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) is The UK
government’s Centre of Excellence for integrated research in terrestrial
and freshwater environments, informing the sustainable management of the
natural environment, including water resources and freshwater biodiversity.
In this talk, I will give an overview of CEH’s work in freshwater science,
highlighting our expertise in the monitoring and assessment of ecosystem
health and the science underpinning the management of European waters. I
will also introduce our proposed work in India that hopes to support work
progressing Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Water & Sanitation). In
particular, we are examining the effectiveness of low-cost, low-energy
wetland/pond systems for improving water quality and developing economic
opportunities in rural and urban India.

*About the speaker*

Laurence Carvalho leads the Freshwater Restoration & Sustainability Group
in the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (Edinburgh, UK).  He focuses his
research on understanding catchment and climate drivers of water quality
using long-term and large-scale datasets. He has expertise in the
monitoring and assessment of the ecological health of lakes and reservoirs
and how water quality impacts the goods and services freshwaters provide.
He is interested in combining new approaches using low-cost sensors,
satellite earth observation and citizen science to strengthen current
freshwater monitoring and management decisions.
