*Abstract*
The talk will take a non-specialist look at the application of materials
chemistry research to solar energy in rural areas. Specifically solar
photocatalysis can, in principle, be used for the destruction of organic
pollutants and bacteria in drinking water, however this has not progressed
to widespread practical use despite much academic study. The talk will
examine some of the barriers to implementation and present our recent work
on low-cost, robust, non-toxic and abundant photocatalytic materials for
solar-driven water purification. In the case of solar photovoltaics,
silicon remains the dominant technology across the world but a number of
other emerging photovoltaic technologies are now under very active
international study. The presentation will touch upon our recent work on
such emerging photovoltaic technologies and consider the pros and cons of
different systems and hence their potential for use in the rural context.
*About the speaker*
Professor Neil Robertson, School of Chemistry, University of Edinburgh,
works in materials chemistry for energy and electronic applications. He
graduated with both BSc and PhD in Chemistry from University of Edinburgh
and worked in the Free University Berlin, University of Wales and Imperial
College London before returning to Edinburgh. He is the Energy Technology
Partnership (Scotland) Theme Leader for Solar, and has previously acted as
Director of the Scottish Institute for Solar Energy Research. He is a
Chartered Chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC),
having also served on the RSC Materials Chemistry Division Council and
Dalton Division Council. He is currently an Associate Editor of RSC Journal
of Materials Chemistry C. He is Director of Internationalisation for the
School of Chemistry, building research partnerships across Asia, Europe and
America. He is interested to discuss and learn more about the societal
contexts of rural energy uptake to balance his background in the physical
sciences.
