*Call for interns for a study on India pangolin distribution and hunting
practises in the Northern Eastern Ghats, Andhra Pradesh*
Project description:
The Indian pangolin has witnessed a rapid decline across India and is
currently listed as an endangered species. Pangolins have been recently
declared the most trafficked animals globally by CITES. Few studies on the
occurrence and ecology of pangolins exist. The northern Eastern Ghats
forest landscape spread across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha contains
diverse habitats
that could potentially support populations of the pangolin. This project aims
to 1) assess the presence of the Indian pangolin in the northern Eastern
Ghats and 2) study the impacts of hunting and trade on pangolins in this
region.
Internship description:
Two (2) interns are required for the the project. The interns will be based
at Chintur, Andhra Pradesh located in the buffer of Papikonda National
Park. Basic accommodation will be provided. A moderate level of physical
fitness and exposure to continuous field work is required as the work
involves considerable amount of walking. We work closely with the local
communities. A positive attitude towards field work and ability to work in
groups is also desired.
The project involves extensive field work around Papikonda NP and
surrounding reserve forests in the Northern Eastern Ghats. Interns will
participate in field surveys, setting up camera traps and assessing habitat
conditions for pangolins and interacting closely with local communities.
The intern may also be required to help with analysis of the field data,
for which he/she will need to work for part of the time from the Ashoka
Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment (ATREE), Bangalore.
Duration: A minimum of 3 to 6 months starting immediately from October 2018
Qualification: Graduate (Bachelors and above) students from any background.
However, individuals with a basic knowledge of field ecology will be
preferred. Masters students pursuing degrees in life sciences or social
sciences who are serious about a career in ecology, conservation and
related fields are encouraged to apply.
Language: English and ability to speak Telugu is desired.
Costs: A nominal honorarium will be paid to the interns. However, all
travel, food and accommodation expenses will be covered.
