*Position summary:*
We are hiring 2 Research associates and 2 research interns to embark on a
new study as part of the ongoing research theme âWildlife Corridors of the
Western Ghatsâ. The study seeks to (i) identify the presence of threatened
and endangered species/populations; (ii) identify near-term and long-term
threats to the species/populations; and (iii) map land-tenure/ownership
within corridors. In the current phase of the study, we will focus on two
regions outside of protected areas in the Western Ghats. The researchers
will be involved in rigorous field surveys of different taxonomic groups as
well as identify land-holding patterns.
*Requirements:*
*Research Associate:*
Candidates with a masterâs degree (in Ecology/Environmental Science/Life
Sciences) or at least two years of field research experience are preferred.
Skills to identify various groups such as amphibians, reptiles, and insects
would be ideal, but familiarity with birds and mammals of the region is the
minimum requirement. Individuals with a firm grasp of ecological sampling
techniques and familiarity with analyzing community ecology data will be
preferred. Working knowledge of Excel, R, and geographic information
systems are expected. As the work will involve interviewing local
communities, the ability to converse in at least Malayalam/Tamil/Kannada is
necessary. Individuals with a flair for rigorous fieldwork and exploration
with the ability to work independently or with a small group in remote
areas and often in challenging conditions need only apply.
*Research Intern*
A Bachelorâs degree with prior research internship experience is ideal.
Skills to identify birds and mammals and other groups of Western Ghats are
preferred. Positions are open to candidates who would like exposure to
field ecology and are open to working in remote areas and often in
challenging conditions. Basic understanding of sampling and data
collection; A working knowledge of Excel and understanding of geographic
information systems; and the ability to converse in at least
Malayalam/Tamil/Kannada would be ideal.
