The Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies, SLU, Umeå, is
looking for a senior researcher to lead a new research program that links
the refaunation of Madagascar’s tropical rainforests to the restoration of
multiple ecosystem services that these forests deliver to Malagasy
communities. The researcher will work closely with Malagasy NGOs to monitor
mammalian and avian seed disperser presence in reforestation areas and
predict the impact of restoring seed disperser communities on the trait
structure of future forests. Such studies should increase our understanding
of the role that refaunation of restoration areas plays in meeting
sustainable development targets.
The position is available at the Department of Wildlife, Fish, and
Environmental Studies at The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in
Umeå, Sweden. The department offers a creative and stimulating environment
and performs internationally recognised basic and applied research,
education and environmental monitoring in the research areas: animal
ecology, aquatic ecology, molecular ecology and restoration ecology (see

). The department has a large proportion of international employees and
well-established national and international collaborations, which gives
opportunities for fruitful exchange.Duties:
The successful candidate will perform research together with the other
members of the unit “Megafauna and Sustainability” (
https://www.slu.se/megasus), which is led by Associate Prof. Joris
Cromsigt. The candidate will be project leader of the above-mentioned
Malagasy research program. In addition, she/he will contribute to the
strategic development of the unit, and the department as a whole, through
development of a strong research line, environmental assessment, and
teaching and supervising students. The position will also include
administrative duties and the successful candidate will be supporting the
daily running of the unit.
Qualifications:
Applicants should hold a PhD in behavioural ecology or equivalent and
should have experienced at least one postdoctoral position. We are looking
for a highly motivated and team-oriented candidate with documented
experience in funding and managing large-scale research and monitoring
programs in tropical rainforests, including Madagascar humid forests. The
successful candidate should have a strong and broad background in the
(behavioural) ecology of Malagasy mammals. Moreover, she/he has worked
closely with Malagasy NGOs and reforestation programs, and frequently
published in high-quality peer-reviewed journals. Experience with
monitoring seed dispersing species and vegetation in Madagascar will count
as a merit. Proficiency in English (spoken and written) and documented
experience with advanced statistical modelling in R (e.g., GLMMs, occupancy
modelling) are both required. Familiarity with both Malagasy and Swedish
language and culture will count as a strong merit.
