*Abstract:*
This lecture focuses on the important role played by boundaries (material
and conceptual, ecological and social, epistemological and ontological) in
the making of conservation landscapes, and the boundary crossings that are
always also occurring, enacting new conservation possibilities--within
community based conservation endeavors and beyond. Boundaries are drawn and
enacted to separate nature from society, science from other ways of
knowing, and ‘Western” and ‘Indigenous” ways of being in the world. I
propose the importance of a focus on boundary drawing and boundary crossing
activities. This means paying attention to the new relations and entities
conservation borders create, and the border-crossings they necessitate. It
means looking at how borders are crossed, interrogated, ignored, and
otherwise transformed on the ground through ecological and social
processes, and with what effects. I draw on empirical work with Maasai in
Tanzania and Kenya to present personal narratives and ecological data on
border crossing, and my own border-crossing activities in research and
writing. I then discuss my current project at ATREE where I will be looking
at the production and application of conservation knowledge through
teaching and Community based conservation activities in Biligiri Rangaswamy
Temple Tiger Reserve.
*About the speaker*:
Mara J. Goldman is an associate professor in the Department of Geography
and a faculty associate in the Institute for Behavioral Sciences, the
Gender and Women’s Studies Program and the Native American and Indigenous
studies Program, at the University of Colorado-Boulder. She has a PhD in
geography and an MS in Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development
from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Goldman’s research is
situated in human-environment geography and can best be described as
political ecology with specific attention to the politics of knowledge,
participation, and access as related to conservation and development
interventions. She has looked at these issues in East Africa, among Maasai
pastoralists in Tanzania and Kenya for nearly two decades.
