*PANEL IV: TRACING CONTINUITIES AND CHANGE IN PASTORAL SYSTEMS *
The high-altitude rangelands (HAR) that straddle a good part of the
Himalayas are considered to be a unique arid grassland ecosystem. These HAR
ecosystems cut across the political boundaries of India, Pakistan,
Afghanistan, China, Nepal and Bhutan and continue to be home to a number of
pastoral communities. These communities are organised in elaborated social
and kinship networks to manage their herds and ensure fair access to
resources that are spread across these vast cold deserts. Continuity and
Change is an important characteristic of these pastoral systems.
Pastoralism in the HAR is undergoing various cultural as well as
socio-economic transitions. This wave of change in the HAR is seen to
create a push and pull in various elements of pastoral lives, be it in
terms of livelihood modifications, livestock management systems or
livestock composition change. This panel will bring an exchange between the
early career researchers working on the interwoven aspects of ecology,
society and, policy in the HAR pastoral systems.
Studies addressing the thematic of ‘Continuity and Change’ in the pastoral
systems from the perspectives of Rangeland Ecology, Political Ecology, and
Environmental History are invited to submit their abstract
for presentations in the panel.
