Turtle Spotting Week 2019
Each year, 23rd of May is celebrated as World Turtle Day. To celebrate this
day, join us in a Citizen Science event for a week from 17th of May and
ending on 23rd to submit observations of freshwater turtles and tortoises.
You may submit observations observed during the week or observations that
you may have recorded in the past .

Freshwater Turtles and Tortoises of India
<https://indiabiodiversityportal.cmail19.com/t/t-i-oukee-l-j/> (FTTI) is a
group dedicated to the 28 species of Indian freshwater turtles and
tortoises. The group includes species pages and observations with
information on their identification features, habitats, geographical
distribution, and basic ecology. FTTI provides a platform for students,
researchers and biodiversity enthusiasts (especially herpers!) in
documenting much needed information on turtles. Through this citizen
science module, your turtle/tortoise pictures help us know more about these
neglected yet ecologically significant species by creating a comprehensive
database on turtles and their distribution. Your sightings can contribute
to prioritizing efforts to conserving these elusive and uncommon species
and their habitats!
*General Guidelines:*
1. You may upload observations of turtles/tortoises sighted both during
the campaign as well as photos taken prior to the campaign days.
2. Observations can be added in the form of photographs or checklists.
Please provide precise locations, habitat descriptions and notes on
behaviour if possible (feeding, nesting or basking on substrates like rock,
on sand, tree log). Please avoid photographs of turtles in the water where
its morphology is not clearly visible.
3. Your discretion is advised for posting information on few species
such the Indian Star Tortoise

Flapshell turtle
<https://indiabiodiversityportal.cmail19.com/t/t-i-oukee-l-i/>, which
face serious threats from poaching. The general location for such species
can be kept hidden while submitting observations by selecting the “Hide
precise location” option.
4. If an observation is unidentified, try to provide good quality and
resolution photographs with portions of the head, limbs, upper and lower
parts of the shell (carapace and plastron) visible.
