*Two Research Fellows in Ecosystem Service Mapping*

We are seeking to appoint two Research Fellows to work with Dr Felix
Eigenbrod on his European Research Council Starting Grant, “Scaling Rules
for Ecosystem Service Mapping (SCALEFORES)” in the School of Geography and
the Environment at the University of Southampton. Qualified applicants are
encouraged to apply for both positions.

It is now widely recognized that the sustainable management of ecosystem
services is essential for humanity’s prospects in the 21st century and
beyond. However, at present there is little data on the distribution of
most services in most places. The overarching idea underpinning SCALEFORES
is that we can use information on the scale-dependency of relationships
between existing social and ecological datasets (e.g. land cover, soil
type, human population density) to create maps of trade-offs and win-wins
between ecosystem services in data-poor regions.

The Research Fellow positions represent exceptional opportunities to help
shape the direction of this ambitious ‘blue sky’ research project and in
doing so develop as an independent researcher.  Ideal candidates will be
collaborative yet independent, highly motivated problem solvers who enjoy
the challenge of working on spatial questions at the interface of ecology,
physical geography and social sciences.

This position will primarily involve collating, manipulating and analysing
existing broad-scale social and ecological spatial datasets. The goals of
this work are two-fold:
1)    Understanding global patterns of co-variation of the key variables
within  existing datasets used to characterize the socio-ecological systems
of planet Earth. In doing so, we will gain an understanding of the
biogeography of the Anthroprocene, and the distributions and
scale-dependencies of relationships between different social and ecological
variables.
2)    Testing the key prediction of SCALEFORES, that the scale-dependency
of relationships between ecosystem services can be predicted by the
scale-dependency of these key existing social and ecological datasets.
These tests will be primarily conducted in Europe, taking advantage both of
the quality and quantity of data available, and of Dr Eigenbrod’s extensive
existing collaborations with the European ES mapping community and project
partners at Forest Research and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a PhD or equivalent
professional qualifications in large-scale ecology, geography or
environmental studies. Advanced skills in GIS and data handling are
essential, as is some understanding of statistical analyses of large-scale
datasets. Some knowledge of programming in the R and/or Python would be a
major advantage. In addition, some experience with remote sensing analysis
software (e.g. ENVI) would be useful, but is not essential.

This position will focus on increasing our fundamental understanding of
when the relationships between multiple ecosystem services are most
affected by spatial scale. The main goals of this work are to:
1)    Create and analyse artificial surfaces of spatial processes (neutral
maps) with known spatial properties. The advantage of this approach –
developed in landscape ecology – is that it becomes possible to examine the
impact of one particular spatial process in the absence of others, thereby
enabling a deeper conceptual understanding of the impacts of different
components of scale-dependency on ecosystem service mapping.
2)    Use this theoretical modelling to develop *a priori* predictions
about the conditions under which spatial scale will most affect
relationships between ecosystem services. These predictions will then be
tested using the datasets collated by the Research Fellow in Applied
Biogeography.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a PhD or equivalent
professional qualifications in spatial and/or ecological modelling,
including strong skills in computer programming (e.g. in R, Matlab or
Python) and statistics, as well as some expertise in GIS and data handling.
Given the interdisciplinary nature of the project, there is flexibility to
accommodate candidates with expertise derived from related disciplinary
backgrounds (e.g. ecology, geography, demography, statistics, computer
science, epidemiology etc).

Both positions will be for 3 years in the first instance, but will likely
be extended for a 4th year subject to fluctuations in the euro/pound
exchange rate. Both positions are available from July 1, 2016.

The School of Geography is Geography was ranked 5th in the UK in terms of
the quality of scholarly outputs in REF 2014, with particular strengths in
environmental modelling (e.g. Andy Tatem, James Dyke), ecosystem services
(e.g. Marije Schaafsma, John Dearing) and remote sensing (e.g. Jadu Dash).
It also offers flexible working opportunities and due consideration will be
given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a
