We, at the Biopsychology Laboratory in the University of Mysore once again
have upto 2 rolling research assistantship positions available in our
project in Nicobar islands for the undermentioned themes.
*Immediate requirements at Great Nicobar for the following opportunities:*
1. Behavioral sampling of habituated long-tailed monkey concerning their
feeding, ranging and encounters with humans and dogs
2. Data assimilation, integration and data analyses along with manuscript
preparation
3. Working with coconut horticulturists for monitoring and recording
harvests, revenue, crop damage, palm health/mortality, etc.
4. Conducting behavioral and cognition experiments (behavioral
transmission, etc.)
5. Assessment of regulatory ecosystem services provided by monkeys through
observations and experimentation
6. Studying seed-dispersal by long-tailed monkey (Flowering and fruiting of
individual trees in tropical climate is extremely unpredictable and may
require substantial time commitment)
7. Closely working with local communities and engage with stakeholders,
help conduct school education program and designing and conducting social
psychology experiments
*Opportunities at Katchal:*
1. Conducting long-term behavioral and cognition experiments
2. Assessing insectivory by monkeys through experimentation
3. Monitoring habituated troops of monkeys and behavioral sampling
4. Studying seed dispersal effectiveness of monkeys wrt other frugivores
5. Interview and focussed group discussions with indigeneous communities
6. Behavioral data analyses, morphometric analyses and manuscript
preparation
*We are open to:*
1. Developing sub-projects within the scope of existing projects
2. Offering authorship on substantive contribution (to be decided by
project developers).
*Privileges:*
1. Only for a time commitment of >4 months:
1.1. Free accommodation (electricity bill beyond Rs. 200 to be shared among
residents)
1.2. Free boarding (up to Rs. 4500 per month)
1.3. Free transportation from Port Blair to field site and back
1.4. Complete coverage of local project-related expenses
2. For time commitment of 2-3 months
2.1. Only INR 500 will be charged for accommodation per month
2.2. Fifty percent of boarding charges (INR 2250) will be borne by the
project
2.3. One-side transportation charges from Port Blair to field site will be
borne
2.4. Complete coverage of project-related expenses
*Kindly note: *There is a 2 months probation period upon successful
completion of which amount spent towards lodging, boarding and
transportation (from Port Blair to field sites) will be reimbursed as
mentioned above. Successful completion of probation period depends on peer
assessment and evaluation by project investigators. More that electricity
charges at field station above Rs. 300 will be divided between boarders.
*Expectations of an intern:*
1. Be motivated to pursue scientific research and be committed to
public/social welfare
2. Have critical logical reasoning skills
2. Dispense duties punctually
3. Be physically fit to undertake field work up to 13hrs in 28-36 degree
celsius and 70-99% humidity
4. Maintain cordial and amicable relationship with group members (that are
multi-cultural and multi-lingual) and with the local populace
5. Be eager to learn and acquire new skills, both empirical, analytical and
theoretical
*Eligibility for application:*
BSc/BA/MSc/MA in Zoology, Wildlife Biology, Conservation Biology/Sciences,
Botany, Anthropology, Psychology, Forestry, Environmental Sciences,
Agriculture, Social Sciences, Sociology, Rural development and other allied
disciplines.
