Research Assistant position to study mother-infant interactions and infant
development among bonnet macaques in Kerala, India.
Hiring organization: Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland.
Position description:
We are looking for a highly motivated, energetic, and enthusiastic research
assistant to collect data on the effects of mother’s personality and
maternal care on infant personality development during the first year of
life in bonnet macaques in southern India. This project is great
opportunity for those who want to obtain field experience before graduate
school, as they will learn field methods relevant to the study of social
behavior.
The project will be conducted near the small village of Thenmala, an
ecotourism site and a predominantly forested area at the foothills of the
Western Ghats, in Kerala (southern India).
The successful assistant’s responsibilities include: 1) locating macaques
according to known ranging patterns; 2) identifying individual macaques
using natural features (we have a photo catalogue of adults); 3)
identification of and naming infant bonnet macaques; 4) data collection on
the social behavior of females and their infants, and; 5) entering and
organizing the data collected. The research assistant will also have an
opportunity to contribute to manuscript preparation and submission.
Qualifications/Experience:
The research or work experience with animal behavior is required for this
position. Experience in individual recognition of animals is an asset.
Willingness to work under challenging tropical conditions (rain, mud, hot
weather) that demand physical stamina is essential as monkeys are followed
from dawn to dusk (about 10h a day; 5 days a week). Moreover, the ideal
assistant would:
1.
Have a background in biology, anthropology, primatology, or a related
field.
2.
Be excited to work independently within the team and learn from others.
3.
Be self-motivated, patient, and able to work with minimal supervision
while out in the field.
4.
Be hardworking, reliable, and committed to follow the working hours
during the week.
5.
Speak English fluently.
6.
Join as soon as possible.
Salary/funding:
A stipend of 28,000 INR/month.
Term of Appointment:
Minimum 9 months, maximum 32 months
Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging)

The research assistant will use part of the salary (see above) to pay the
rent. Research-related equipment will be provided (tablet, data sheets,
binoculars, etc.), while assistants should provide their own personal
equipment (adequate shoes and clothes, raingear, etc.). Food, personal
travel, international flights, visas, vaccinations and medical aid, and
insurance are not covered.
