*Volunteer Opportunity - Habituation and Data collection of Central
Himalayan Langurs*
*Position Description*: We are looking for volunteers to work towards
habituation as well as data collection of Central Himalayan langur
*(Semnopithecus
schistaceus)* from 1st August 2018 to 1 December 2018 period under
long-term research project titled “Ecology and behaviour of Central
Himalayan Langur in Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Uttarakhand, India.
The volunteer tasks will include assisting in habituation of the Himalayan
Langurs which requires long hours of hiking in the forest and a great deal
of patience. Other tasks include (a) Learning individual identities, (b)
Collecting group scan data, (c) Systematic data entry (d) Vegetation
sampling, and (e) Taking GPS data on range use. The typical day consists of
approximately 10 hours walking in the forest, an average 6 km-7 km per day,
including rainy days. The work is physically demanding and full of
challenges working in the higher Himalayas.

*Number of position:* Multiple
*Study Site:* This position is based in Ansuya in Chamoli district
Uttarakhand, India. Ansuya is a famous pilgrim as well as trekking place.
It is a very beautiful small village at 2000 m -2500 m elevation with a
good diversity of high altitude mammals and birds.
*Living conditions*: Very basic living conditions, only tent accommodation/
local huts. The field site is located about 6 km from the motorable road.
Very basic food depending on the supply and season. Network connectivity is
available in few places, just for the call (Only BSNL).
*Qualifications/Experience*:
- Must have completed a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in biology,
anthropology, or related field.
- Must have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Must have some field experience preferably in high altitudes or
with primates
- Must be able to live and work independently and as part of a
multicultural team.
- Good physical fitness is essential as most of the day will be
spent hiking after the study groups.
- Due to the remoteness of the field site and the lack of
communication infrastructure, volunteers must also be of sound physical and
mental health without any pre-existing conditions that might require
immediate medical attention.
