Volunteers – Central Himalayan Langur, Garhwal Himalayas

Position Description:

We are looking for a volunteer to help with research on Ecology and
Conservation Status of the Virtually Unknown Central Himalayan Langur
in the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Northern India. The appointment
is for a minimum period of 3 months and maximum of 6 months (starting
from May). The job requires working long days (up to 12 hours) and
walking long distances through temperate forest, dense vegetation.
Living conditions are very basic, although there is electricity from
solar panels. The study is under the guidance of renowned
primatologist Prof. Anindya Sinha and funded by Rufford Small Grant
Foundation.

The main responsibilities for this position are
 (a) conducting focal and scan animal samples

 (b) recording GPS readings of ranging locations

 (c) conducting vegetation monitoring (phenology and belt transect)

 (d)  Entering and managing data for subsequent analyses

The study site, Chopta (Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary), is a remote
area with an altitude range between 2800 and 4,000 m above sea level .
The sanctuary is covered by beautiful temperate forest and high
altitude meadows .The forest encompasses an amazing variety of plant,
bird and mammal species, including common leopard, Himalayan Black
bear, Himalayan Thar and two primate species Central Himalayan Langur
and Rhesus Macaque.

Qualifications/Experience:
Applicants should:
- Have a B.Sc. or B.A. in biology, primatology, biological
anthropology, zoology, or a related field.
- Have basic knowledge in collecting behavioral data (previous field
research is a plus)
- Have the strength to follow study animals in a difficult and hilly terrain.

- Be able to drive a vehicle.


Support provided for volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):

Research assistants will be provided with basic accommodation, food
and other basic supplies while at the field site. Volunteers are
required to get their own winter clothing, footwear, rain gear and
sleeping bag. Volunteers have to pay their own travel to the field
site.
