Dear YETI members,
I am Deepthi Chimalakonda, a PhD student in the Theoretical Ecology
and Modelling lab based at the National University of Singapore. I am
looking for interested research assistants/volunteers to conduct
wetland bird surveys in Telangana, starting from November 25, 2015.
Bird identification, adherence to study design and driving (must have
a two-wheeler license) are the three most important skills I am
looking for. Your qualifications do not matter as long as you meet
the above three criteria. Other skills that are preferred but are not
mandatory are being conversant in Telugu and commitment for at-least a
month. The work will last for 3-4 months. Research assistants will
be paid.
My lure/warning
My friends often joke about my choice of field site - a far cry from
the image of tall trees or vast grasslands or deep waters.
To set your expectations right, you will be stationed in Warangal, a
big town in Telangana (you can hang around NIT food joints to feel
young and cool).
You would travel to wetlands every morning and evening from the town
(~80 km per day). Mornings are beautiful and fresh but you are often
welcomed by men coming on their super bikes and crapping just opposite
the place where you put up your scope. Curious women will ask you
questions on why you have to do this job when you can be happily
married. Fishermen will open up about what they hunt after a little
bit of coaxing. Sometimes, we can even pass off as government
engineers who have come to repair the bund. While some of these
experiences are frustrating, many others are not. You would immensely
enjoy the joy on a 60 year old's face when sees through the scope and
says 'chala pedda ga undi pakshi' (translates to the 'bird is so big')
and when he/she starts describing the bird to you. Or when they offer
you fresh vegetables. Or when they spill secrets on their village
politics. People are very helpful. Sometimes, so helpful that they
will offer you fresh toddy (if you drink). Warangal also has many
bars, restaurants and even multiplexes! (oh! and good biryani too)
In all the six months that we spent there last year, we had 0 bad experiences.
So, do not apply if your vision of field doesn't match with mine.
You should definitely apply if you think we can have a great time
here. I look forward to an enthusiastic person who would share my
everyday frustration and joys of fieldwork- all while looking for
water birds.
