Dear all,
The Wild Canids–India Project (WCIP) is pleased to announce a reboot of our
citizen-science based nation-wide assessment of India's wild canids and
striped hyenas.
Four years ago, we launched WCIP as a country-wide conservation research
project on wild canids and hyenas. Our project helped create the most
updated, reliable distribution maps for these carnivores in India. This was
possible because of the sighting records submitted by hundreds of
passionate and enthusiastic citizen-scientists.
Four years on, we are taking this forward and aiming to address more
interesting questions.
From 1 October to 31 December 2022, we are doing a 'data blitz' of sorts,
seeking information on wild canid and hyena sightings in the country. This
information will be used to model and track changes in carnivore
distribution patterns. If you have seen any of the following species —
dhole, golden jackal, Indian wolf, Tibetan wolf, Indian fox, red fox,
desert fox, Tibetan fox, striped hyena — in the past four years (Jan 2019
– present), please report your sightings on www.wildcanids.net. You can
also visit the website to learn about all our previous achievements,
milestones, and scientific findings.
