The day starts before the sun. Was that a quick splash and a rustle
from the electric blue wings of an electric blue Malabar Whistling
Thrush? Now, who made those heaps of nuts at the roots of trees? Fying
squirell or a Gerbil? What was that distinct scent at dusk? A mother
leopard’s visit to the watering hole? Did you keep count of the hares
and barking deer you crossed? At the end of a long dreary trek, you
get to lose yourself in Purna’s glistening water, as you watch fruit
bats skim the river and listen to the Jungle Owlet’s calls. As sleep
slips in, another morning’s promise includes the
black-and-white-and-dream-like Paradise Flycatcher.
Tucked well within Gujarat’s Dangs district, stands one of the
least-explored northernmost slices of the Western Ghats. Lush green in
the rains and shimmering bronze in the summer, the Purna Wild Life
Sanctuary (WLS) is a treasure trove of India’s natural heritage. The
folds of Purna’s teak and bamboo foliage nurture a network of
seriously endangered animals and plants.
If you ever dreamed to protect nature, the first arrow you need is
knowledge. Learn from the experts about the natural resources Purna
populates. Purna’s ecosystem will help you see the Western Ghats zone
in present-day context.
Studies in Purna are only nascent, with the actual diversity far
exceeding the recorded tally. Assimilate information collected over

live and work in the Purna WLS. As Purna mourns the recent extinction
of tigers, gaur, mugger crocodile, and the giant squirrel, she still
protects rare species such as the mysterious and ethereal Malabar
