The Government of India has just sanctioned a high level national mission
to prioritize strategic directions and synthesize existing knowledge on the
linkages between biodiversity and ecosystem services as well as by
quantifying and mapping key ecosystem services in terrestrial and
fresh-water biomes across India. We need highly motivated post-doctoral
and master’s candidates with backgrounds in ecology and environmental
science with programming skills in R and/or GIS/RS training and /or climate
change modelling skills to work with scientists at the National Centre for
Biological Sciences (NCBS) and the Ashoka Trust for Research in ecology and
the environment (ATREE), Bengaluru.
We are looking for a Junior Research Fellow for a project relating to the
assessment of the extent and kinds of services provided by different
ecosystems across India. The work is a precursor to the recently approved
National Biodiversity Mission (a proposed unique and ambitious ten-year
initiative on India’s biodiversity and its links to human well-being that
will represent a long-term investment in the planet and human-life support
systems, as well as in generating numerous innovative and sustainable
livelihoods, and job opportunities across several sectors), and will
initially be for a period of one year.
The successful candidate will be based at the National Centre for
Biological Sciences, Bengaluru and will be primarily be responsible for: i)
organizing meetings and regional-level consultations with different
stakeholders on issues relating to the supply and demand of different
ecosystem services, and ii) carrying out literature surveys to synthesize
the state-of-knowledge on the status and extent of provisioning of
different ecosystem services by different biomes in India. The candidate
will also assist in the development of spatially explicit maps of the
provisioning of key ecosystem services across India, and in the preparation
of a report synthesizing the findings of the project. The candidate will
work in close association with a post-doctoral researcher and a team of
scientists from the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS),
Bengaluru and the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology & the Environment
(ATREE), Bengaluru.
We are looking for candidates with an MSc in ecology / biological sciences
or a related area. The successful candidate must have a basic knowledge of
ecosystem services, be able to work independently under tight deadlines,
have excellent written and oral communication skills and organizational
abilities, and also be able to work in a collaborative research
environment. Knowledge of GIS and statistics is a plus. The successful
candidate will be based in Bangalore, and will work collaboratively with
Dr. Uma Ramakrishnan (NCBS, Bangalore), Dr. Mahesh Sankaran (NCBS,
Bangalore) and Dr. Jagdish Krishnaswamy (ATREE, Bangalore). Salaries will
be in accordance with Government of India norms.
