Dear all
Our lab group at IISER Tirupati is looking for 2 or 3 interns to work on the
Shola Sky Island project from October 2022.
The internship period will be for at least for 6 months, starting mid-October.
Opportunity #1: Data visualisation and analyses. This requires an interest in
birds, but mostly skills with R programming. Some knowledge of statistics is
useful. Hostel accommodation in Tirupati is possible. You will be working in a
team and mentored by very skilled folks.
Opportunity #2: Bird capture, handling and blood sample collection. This
project involves working with a mixed-gender team in remote locations (no
mobile signal or electricity on many days). But opportunities to learn from
bird-in-hand, including several endemics from fascinating landscapes - an
opportunity not many in the future will have, thanks to the Schedule list
modifications of the Wildlife Protection Act (Read more about that here).
Basic field accommodation will be provided, but all team members are expected
to share field station duties.
Driving license (with ability to drive) is a preferred skill.

Stipend and progression:
For those with experience and skills relevant to the project, a stipend of Rs
12000 will be provided. On successful completion of two months of internship, a
possibility for applying as a project assistant (Rs 20,000) can be explored.
If you do not have experience, but have the motivation to learn and commit six
months to the project, we can offer an unpaid internship and support for field
accommodation and food (only for the field project).
Certificates of internship and letters of recommendation to other institutions
or academic programs can be provided to all interns.
These opportunities may not work for students pursuing a degree (bachelor's or
master's) and will not be suitable for a master's dissertation.

Apart from exposure to the specific project, interns will also get exposure to
other research conducted in the lab, including avian genomics, acoustics and
landscape ecology.
We will conduct telephonic interviews and talk to referees on the phone. The
position will be closed as soon as appropriate candidates are found.
