By the way, 1st and 2nd generation COFDM receivers, according to the French TNT report, http://www.csa.fr/pdf/Rapport-GT2-Aspects_Radiofrequence_de_la_TNT.pdf p. 23, were not that great at pre-echo either. So perhaps what echo there was in those London flats was close-in and mostly lagging. If that's true, that also suggests that a modern 8-VSB receiver would work well by comparison.
