I can only speculate about the effect of the color dot orientation and the 
rest, but this one seems similar to the effect of glossy finish vs. mat finish, 
in photographic prints.

Yes, the mat finish ends up looking less sharp. I have to believe it's the same 
reason as you postulate for the anti-glare glass.
