[opendtv] Re: ATSC vs. NTSC reception at a distance

Some simple Fact Checking via FCC database reveals the following:
1. NTSC: CH6, 100 kW, 420 m HAAT, (Licensed VHF)
2. DTV: CH50, 0.796 kW, 319.4 m HAAT, (Special Temporary Authority)
3. DTV: CH50, 1000 kW, 373 m HAAT, (Change Proposal)
In the Channel Election Process, they elected to give up their long-range
low-band VHF assignment and simply keep their new digital UHF assignment.
So what did they expect would happen...it was no contest to begin with.
A the digital station is likely operating with lower height and micropower STA
parameters, waiting for completion of the CP.
But I bet the CATV and DVB users don't even notice the difference....

Not enough information to see what is going on, but that is
contrary to everything I have read and experienced, and
contrary to what the sensitivity and C/N margin numbers tell
us also.
If the Fox6 analog channel was VHF and the Fox6-DT is low
power UHF, perhaps that explains the difference. And even
there, I seem to get solid reception of low power UHF from
almost 50 miles away, and comparatively much poorer reception
of full power NTSC from the same distance.
I would have to disagree with the notion that somehow NTSC
gets more range, all else being equal.
